Originating from Gary Chapman’s seminal book, “The 5 Love Languages,” this concept makes clear how our preferred modes of giving and receiving love shape our relationships. Whether it’s through thoughtful acts of service, spending quality time together, physical touch, receiving gifts, or affirming words, understanding these preferences is the key to unlocking a deeper connection with someone you value.

So, how do you select a words of affirmation gift that speaks volumes? It’s all about embedding meaningful words into your chosen token of appreciation. Whether it’s for a celebration, a milestone, or simply to brighten their day, understanding the language of words of affirmation can transform your gift into something unforgettable – just be sure, if you’re going to do this, that your heart is in the right place, which means you’re not doing it for show, but out of authenticity (otherwise, it can have the opposite effect).

In this way, the gift of words will be showered on that person over and over throughout the week, boosting them with love and appreciation.

Inspirational Coffee Mug

Sometimes all it takes is a simple mug to provide a word of affirmation! Companies like Zazzle let you create a personalized mug with a quote, phrase, or word that’s perfect for your recipient. Or if you aren’t feeling entirely creative, they also offer premade inspirational mugs (here’s one of our personal favorites).

Do you know someone who loves words of affirmation and plants? Combine the best of both worlds with a motivational planter. These can range from sentimental to absolutely hilarious, depending on your recipient. While some come pre-potted with a plant, others are empty so you can find the perfect plant to go with the motivational quote.

A Handwritten Letter

For someone who thrives on words of affirmation, there’s really only one thing better than a handwritten note or letter: a handwritten letter sent through the mail. Hardly anyone uses snail mail anymore, which is all the more reason to consider writing a heartfelt message — for a loved one’s birthday, a milestone celebration, or a thank you — and sending it through the mail.

Affirmation Desk Calendar

Maybe it’s just us, but it seems like work is a really great place to provide encouragement. This is especially true if any of your coworkers have words of affirmation as their love language! Since they likely spend a fair amount of time at their desk, consider getting them an encouraging desk calendar. These come in all shapes and sizes and offer some great daily inspiration and wordy wisdom.

A Giving Key

The Giving Keys is a company that stamps keys with encouraging words. The keys are made into everything from necklaces and earrings to keychains. The idea is that you give someone a key with a word that is significant for their season of life. They are then encouraged to “pay it forward” by eventually giving their key to someone else who needs the word more than they do. This is a fantastic gift for your words of affirmation friend, coworker, or loved one. Not only will they feel cherished and known, but they will get the opportunity to do what they do best: share a word of encouragement with someone else!

Encouragement Jar

This is a great way to spread some love and encouragement around the office or workplace. And it doesn’t need to be a gift for only those with words of affirmation love language. We all need some encouragement now and then. Put a jar in a common area and give everyone 2-5 strips of paper. Each person should write a positive quote, words of encouragement, or a fun message on the papers. Place them in the jar and let everyone in the office grab an encouraging word when they need it. They can either read it and place it back in the jar, or keep it and replace it with a new word or quote. In this way, the jar keeps on giving. While everyone will love it, we promise your affirmation-loving colleagues will feel all kinds of special because of this simple jar!

Message Board

A fun way to share encouragement with anyone from your kids to your coworkers is using a simple whiteboard. For a more personalized look, consider a custom message board.

A retro party celebrates styles, cultures, and elements from the past, typically focusing on the 20’s, ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s. The idea is to revive the music, fashion, and ambience of the chosen era, making it feel like a time capsule event. Retro themes are all about nostalgia, bringing back the fun and flair of bygone days through decorations, attire, music, and games.

Planning Your Retro Theme Party

Step 1: Choose Your Era

Start by deciding on the specific decade you want to celebrate. Each era has distinct characteristics:

  • ‘20s: Flappers, Speakeasies and the Jazz Age.
  • ’50s: Rock ‘n’ roll, diners, and Grease-inspired outfits.
  • ’60s: Hippie culture, psychedelic colors, and mod fashion.
  • ’70s: Disco fever, bell-bottoms, and funky patterns.
  • ’80s: Neon colors, big hair, and iconic pop music.
  • ’90s: Grunge and hip-hop influences, bold prints, and oversized fashion.

Step 2: Retro Outfits

Encourage guests to dress according to the chosen era. For example, flapper dresses for a ’20s theme, disco outfits for the ’70s, or neon leg warmers for an ’80s party. Providing a dress code or suggestions can help guests feel more involved and excited.

Step 3: Decorations and Venue

Photo by RDNE Stock project on Pexels.com

Decorate your venue with era-appropriate items. Think of disco balls for the ’70s, arcade games for the ’80s, or vinyl records and posters of iconic bands for a ’90s party. Venues can range from your living room transformed with themed decorations to renting a space that naturally fits the era, like a vintage diner or a disco hall.

Step 4: Music and Entertainment

Photo by David Bartus on Pexels.com

Create a playlist with hit songs from the chosen decade. Consider hiring a DJ who specializes in retro music or setting up a karaoke station with classic hits. Games and activities should also reflect the era, like a dance-off during an ’80s party or a hula hoop contest for a ’60s theme.

Step 5: Food and Drinks

Tailor your menu to the time period. Classic soda pop and diner food for a ’50s theme, fondue for the ’70s, or snack foods that were popular in the ’80s and ’90s. Don’t forget era-specific cocktails or mocktails.

Step 6: Collaborative Memory Book Station

Set up a station where guests can contribute to a collaborative birthday memory book. Provide prompts related to the theme for guests to share their favorite memories from the era or messages for the birthday person. Newlywords is a great option for this, as people can contribute directly, prompts can be provided to help people know what to write, and more! • Dance Floor: A dance area with a good sound system playing hit songs from the ’80s is essential. Tracks from Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and Michael Jackson will get everyone dancing.

  • Photo Booth: Create an ’80s-themed photo booth complete with props like inflatable guitars, neon sunglasses, leg warmers, and Rubik’s Cubes. A backdrop featuring iconic ’80s visuals will make for memorable photos.

Food and Drinks

  • Retro Candy Bar: Set up a candy bar with a selection of ’80s candy for guests to enjoy or take home as party favors. Include classics like Nerds, Candy Buttons, and Bubble Tape.

1990’s Retro Party

Photo by cottonbro studio on Pexels.com

The 1990s were a dynamic decade that bridged the gap between the analog and digital worlds, marked by groundbreaking music, distinctive fashion trends, and the dawn of the internet era. A ’90s-themed party is a fantastic way to relive this pivotal period, offering a nostalgic blend of grunge, hip-hop, pop culture, and early tech vibes. Here’s how to throw a rad 1990s-themed birthday bash that will have your guests saying, “Talk to the hand,” because they’re too busy dancing.

Creating The Atmosphere

  • Music and Pop Icons: The ’90s saw a diverse music scene. Encourage guests to dress as their favorite ’90s musicians or pop icons, from Nirvana and Tupac to Britney Spears and the Spice Girls.
  • TV and Movie Classics: The ’90s produced iconic TV shows and movies. A party theme around “Friends,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Clueless,” or “Titanic” can provide plenty of inspiration for decorations and attire.
  • Retro Tech and Games: Celebrate the early days of the internet, gaming, and mobile tech. Think of incorporating elements like floppy disks, early cell phones, and references to classic video games like “Super Mario Bros” or “Doom.”

Venue and Decorations

  • Choosing a Venue: Any space that allows for themed decorations and a dance floor can work. Consider a home party for a more intimate “house party” vibe, or rent out a space for a larger bash.
  • Decorations: Use bright colors, neon lights, and patterns like zebra stripes or leopard print. Decorate with posters of ’90s bands, movies, and shows. You can also use old CDs and cassettes to add to the nostalgia.

Entertainment and Activities

  • Dance Floor: Create a playlist full of ’90s hits across genres—grunge, hip-hop, pop, and techno—to keep the dance floor lively. Consider having a “best dance moves” contest featuring popular ’90s dances like the Macarena or the “Running Man.”
  • Karaoke: Set up a ’90s karaoke station where guests can belt out hits from the decade. This is a great way for everyone to showcase their love for ’90s music.
  • Photo Booth: Equip a photo booth with ’90s props like inflatable boomboxes, slap bracelets, fanny packs, and oversized sunglasses. A backdrop featuring iconic ’90s imagery or phrases will make for memorable snapshots.

Food and Drinks

  • Themed Snacks: Serve snacks and candies that were popular in the ’90s, such as Dunkaroos, Gushers, and Fruit Roll-Ups. Pizza and bagel bites can also be a hit for savory options.
  • Signature Cocktails and Drinks: Offer cocktails inspired by ’90s pop culture, or stick to classic sodas of the decade like Surge and Crystal Pepsi. For a fun twist, serve drinks in cups that change color with temperature, reminiscent of the color-changing items popular at the time.

Music Playlist

  • Curate a Playlist: A mix of ’90s genres will cater to all tastes. Include hits from bands and artists like Backstreet Boys, Nirvana, TLC, and Green Day. Don’t forget about one-hit wonders that’ll have everyone reminiscing.
  • Music Videos and TV Show Themes: If you have the setup, playing ’90s music videos or TV show intros can add a cool visual element to your party and spark conversations about favorite ’90s moments.

FAQs About Throwing A Retro Party

Photo by RDNE Stock project on Pexels.com

How do you plan a retro theme party?

To plan a retro theme party, start by selecting a specific decade or era that inspires you, such as the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s. Consider the music, fashion, and cultural trends of that time to guide your decorations, playlist, attire, and activities. Use iconic elements from the era for invitations, decor, and entertainment. Choose a venue that complements your theme, curate a menu of era-appropriate snacks and drinks, and plan activities or games that reflect the chosen decade’s spirit.

What is a retro party theme?

A retro party theme is a celebration that takes inspiration from the past, focusing on the music, fashion, decor, and cultural phenomena of a specific previous era or decade. It’s an opportunity to relive and enjoy the distinctive styles and trends of that time period, often with a nostalgic or humorous appreciation for how those elements contrast with contemporary tastes.

How do you make a unique birthday party?

Make a unique birthday party by personalizing the theme to reflect the interests, era, or favorite pastime of the birthday person. Incorporate creative invitations, decorations, and party favors that stand out and resonate with the theme. Offer interactive experiences, like custom photo booths, themed DIY craft stations, or personalized games and activities. Consider live entertainment that matches the theme, and curate a menu that adds an element of surprise or nostalgia.

How do you make retro fun?

Make retro fun by engaging guests with interactive and immersive experiences that celebrate the chosen era. Organize costume contests, themed photo booths, and trivia games focused on the decade’s pop culture. Provide a dance area with a playlist of hit songs from the era to encourage everyone to get on the dance floor. Incorporating modern twists on classic era-specific activities can also add a fresh and enjoyable element to the nostalgia.

What can I wear for a retro theme?

What you wear for a retro theme depends on the decade you’re celebrating. For the ’50s, think poodle skirts or greaser jackets. The ’60s call for mod dresses or hippie attire. For a ’70s look, opt for disco-inspired outfits or bohemian chic. The ’80s are all about neon colors, leg warmers, and shoulder pads, while the ’90s might inspire grunge flannels, crop tops, and platform sneakers.

What is considered Retro style?

Retro style refers to imitating or deriving inspiration from the past, especially in fashion, decor, and media, often with a sentimental or ironic appreciation of those eras. It typically focuses on the styles of the 20th century, from the 1950s through the 1990s, celebrating the distinctive designs, trends, and cultural elements of those decades. Retro style can blend various era-specific aesthetics into a cohesive, nostalgic look that pays homage to the past.

How To Throw A Wine Tasting Party At Home In 2025

Wondering how to throw a wine tasting party at home? A wine tasting party is a fabulous idea for birthday celebrations, retirement parties, celebrating getting a new job or a new home, or just as an excuse to have fun with friends and family!

Especially for birthdays and retirements, wine is a great idea because it’s something that improves with age. With some bottles of wine, a little bit of cheese or chocolate and custom glasses (or wine glasses you already own), a tasting party doesn’t have to break the bank, either!

You can also give it a spin by encouraging guests to bring their favorite wines as gifts that can be used for the tasting. You could even go a bit further to test everyone’s palette with a blind wine tasting party!

Whether you’re planning a casual gathering or a themed soirée, here’s your comprehensive guide to orchestrating a memorable wine tasting event right in your own living room.

How to Host a Wine Tasting Party at Home: Step By Step Guide

Step 1: Gather Essentials for Your Wine Tasting Setup

Photo by Gustavo Fring on Pexels.com

1. Wine Selection: Choose 3-4 different wines based on your preferences or a specific theme. Plan for one bottle of each wine for every 6 guests.

2. Wine Glasses: Provide clear wine glasses, ideally with stems, for each guest. Opt for separate glasses for whites and reds, or ensure glasses are rinsed between pours.

3. Tasting Mats: Offer tasting mats for guests to organize their glasses and jot down notes about each wine. Printable templates are available online, or create your own!

4. Blank Paper for Tasting Notes: Provide guests with blank sheets and pens to take notes on the wines’ characteristics, including color, aromas, flavors, and personal impressions.

5. Water: Keep guests hydrated with water jugs and individual glasses to cleanse palates between tastings.

6. Snacks: Offer food pairings to complement the wines. Consider themed snacks based on your wine selection or regional cuisine. Keep reading for menu ideas!

Step 2: Choose a Wine Tasting Theme

Photo by Elina Sazonova on Pexels.com

1. Wine and Food Pairing: Focus on pairing wines with complementary foods. Themes can include wine and cheese pairings, wine and chocolate pairings, or wine and pizza pairings.

2. Old World vs. New World Wines: Highlight the differences between European (Old World) and non-European (New World) wines. Explore variations in body, flavor profiles, and winemaking styles.

3. Grape Variety: Compare wines made from the same grape variety but sourced from different regions. Examples include Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, or Pinot Noir.

4. Wines by Region: Explore wines from specific regions like Spain, Italy, France, or California. Select a variety of styles representative of each region’s winemaking traditions.

5. Wine Styles: Concentrate on one style of wine, such as sparkling, white, or red. Sample different variations within the chosen style to discern nuances in flavor and texture.

6. Blind Wine Tasting: Add an element of mystery by concealing wine labels in brown bags. Challenge guests to identify grape varieties, regions, and vintages solely based on taste and aroma.

Step 3: Consider Hiring a Sommelier

Photo by Pavel Danilyuk on Pexels.com

For an expert-guided tasting experience, consider hiring a sommelier to curate your wine selection and lead the event. Sommeliers can provide in-depth knowledge, personalized recommendations, and professional tasting guidance for you and your guests.

Step 4: Create or Choose A Music Playlist for Your Wine Tasting Party

Photo by Jill Burrow on Pexels.com

Enhance the ambiance of your wine tasting party with carefully curated music playlists that complement the mood and elevate the experience. Whether you’re aiming for a relaxed vibe or a lively atmosphere, the right music can set the tone for an unforgettable evening. Here are some suggestions to inspire your wine tasting playlists:

1. Jazz and Blues: Create a sophisticated ambiance with smooth jazz and blues tunes. Think of artists like Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, and John Coltrane whose soulful melodies will enhance the tasting experience without overpowering conversation.

2. Classical Elegance: For a touch of refinement, consider classical music selections that add a sense of elegance to your gathering. Choose compositions by Mozart, Bach, or Beethoven to create an atmosphere of timeless sophistication.

3. Acoustic Vibes: Keep the atmosphere laid-back and intimate with acoustic guitar or folk-inspired tunes. Artists like Jack Johnson, Norah Jones, and Ed Sheeran provide the perfect backdrop for relaxed conversation and enjoyment of fine wine.

4. World Music Exploration: Transport your guests to exotic locales with a diverse selection of world music. Explore the sounds of Latin jazz, Bossa Nova, or Flamenco guitar for a cultural journey that complements the international flavors of the wines being tasted.

5. Chillout Lounge: Set a tranquil atmosphere with chillout lounge music characterized by downtempo beats and ambient sounds. Artists like Bonobo, Thievery Corporation, and Zero 7 create a soothing backdrop for sipping and savoring.

6. Wine Country Tunes: Pay homage to the vineyards and wine regions with country-inspired tunes that celebrate the rustic charm of winemaking. From classic country ballads to contemporary hits, artists like Willie Nelson, Shania Twain, and Chris Stapleton capture the essence of wine country living.

7. Personalized Favorites: Customize your playlists with your own favorite songs and artists that resonate with you and your guests. Consider creating collaborative playlists where guests can contribute their own song selections, adding a personal touch to the music selection.

Make It Extra Special with a Collaborative Memory Book

If your wine tasting party is honoring a birthday, anniversary, retirement, or any other significant milestone, consider adding a heartfelt touch to the celebration.

18 Step By Step Tips To Plan A Milestone Birthday Party In 2025

Looking for how to plan a milestone birthday for any and every age and personality? This is the guide for you!

When my family planned my grandparents’ 80th birthday parties, we went all out because they were special people who deserved to be celebrated by family, friends and honestly, everyone in their town!

For my grandfather’s, I designed graphics with all his crazy sayings (like, “don’t take any wooden nickels), and put them up along the wall. We also made a timeline of his life to display, and put trinkets on the tables that had to do with his career, hobbies and interests. We also had wooden nickels made with his caricature on them, and as people came into the venue, we had a sign that instructed them to take 2 each – one to keep, and one to slyly hand him when they shook his hand (this was always my joke with him)!

For my grandmother, I used vintage advertisements and photoshopped her into them to display, and we bought a blank apron that we put some pins on and had people sign in colorful markers. For both of these birthdays, we had a “throne” for the person of honor to sit on as people arrived so they could get in line and speak to them before they went to get food and go to their tables.

We also had a cake made for my grandmother’s from the best bakery in town and had her picture put on the cake, and a cookie cake for my grandfather with Cookie Monster on it because he loved cookies! These were memorable and amazing birthdays that I am so proud that we did, especially now that my grandparents are no longer with us.

I understand the importance of celebrating a milestone birthday in a way that’s the perfect mix of fun and sentimental – and I’ve created a list of my top tips to do just that!

What Birthdays Count As Milestones?

Photo by George Dolgikh on Pexels.com

Most milestone birthdays are the ones that end in 0, except for ones like 18 and 21, which may differ depending on where you live and your cultural traditions (for example, 13 in Judaism is milestone birthday, when people have bar and bat mitzvah celebrations; or a quinceanera at 15 in Mexico and many Latin American cultures).

However, these rules aren’t hard and fast; other milestone birthdays can include a 16th birthday; birthdays that end in 5; and champagne birthdays, which are once-in-a-lifetime occurrences, when your birthdate matches your age (like, turning 11 when your birthday is on the 11th). This is also known as a golden birthday.

Here are the most well-known and accepted milestone birthdays:

  • 18
  • 21
  • 30
  • 40
  • 50
  • 60
  • 70
  • 80
  • 90
  • 100

Ideas For Unique & Memorable Milestone Birthday Celebrations

1. Set a Budget

You can do a lot with just a little, or if you have a lot, you still want to be smart about how you spend it! If you want to splurge on something like a DJ or fancy photo booth photographer, for example, you might want the venue to be less fancy – maybe your backyard or religious organization, for example.

2. Pick a Theme

Your theme can be anything you want! For my grandparents’ celebrations, the theme was them and their lives. Themes create a fun and cohesive element to any party. They can also include favorite hobbies, beloved movies or adventures, their career, or just something fun. Themes help set the tone for decorations, attire, music and games, and even food and drinks!

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • A decade, like the ‘90s
  • Glam Hollywood
  • Tropical Luau
  • Gone Fishing
  • A favorite place, like Paris
  • A Murder Mystery

3. Decide on Your Venue

Next is to decide on your venue. Whether you’re hosting at home, renting a venue, or booking a space at a restaurant or event hall, choose a location that suits your theme, budget, and guest count. Make sure the venue has all the amenities you need, such as ample space, parking, and catering options.

Here’s a list things to consider:

  • How many people will be attending? Make sure your venue is big enough (or not too big, depending)
  • What will the weather be like, and can everyone get to the venue and park without an issue?
  • If you’ll need a kitchen or AV set-up, make sure the place has that
  • Choose from indoor or outdoor venue
  • Decide if you want to have the party at home, or at someone else’s house or yard

4. Pick A Date & Time

Choose a date and time that works for everyone involved, including guests you most want to attend. Consider scheduling the party on a weekend or a day when most people are likely to be available. Make sure to check for any conflicting events that might affect attendance.

5. Create Your Guest List & Send Out Invites with RSVPs

Since life milestones often inspire gratitude and the chance to look back on past decades’ accomplishments, your guest list deserves special attention. Invite people from different stages of the guest of honor’s life. High school friends, college friends and colleagues from their former job are just a few people who might be welcome!

Send out invitations well in advance, either through traditional mail or digitally via email or social media. Include all the necessary details such as date, time, location, dress code (if any), and RSVP deadline. Keep track of RSVPs to finalize catering and seating arrangements. Many online Evite places will also send out reminders to people to RSVP closer to the deadline.

5. Plan the Menu

Decide on the food and drinks you’ll serve at the party. Will it be a sit-down dinner, a buffet, or just hors d’oeuvres and cocktails? Consider any dietary restrictions or preferences of your guests and ensure there’s enough variety to satisfy everyone.

6. Find The Perfect Cake (Or Alternative)

The cake is often the centerpiece of any birthday celebration, so it’s essential to find the perfect one that suits both your taste and the theme of the party! Consider traditional options like tiered cakes with intricate designs (like a photo of the birthday individual) or modern alternatives like cupcakes, cake pops, or even pies, cookie cakes or ice cream sundaes!

If you’re opting for a cake, schedule a tasting with local bakeries to sample different flavors and discuss customization options. Don’t forget to consider any dietary restrictions or preferences of your guests, such as gluten-free or vegan alternatives.

Whatever you decide, make sure to order or prepare your chosen dessert well in advance to ensure it’s ready to impress when the time comes to blow out the candles and make a wish!

7. Mix Up a Signature Drink

Most milestone birthdays are after age 21, so your guest of honor will be able to throw back a signature cocktail. For a big 30th birthday, a drink celebrating the Roaring ’20s is a clever addition to the menu. Turning 50? Blend together something using 50-proof alcohol.

8. Know What You’re Doing For Gifts

For gifts, you can let people bring what they want, but let them know gifts are welcome. Here are more ideas for what to do for gifts for a milestone birthday celebration:

  • Consider inviting guests to donate to a favorite charity
  • If there’s something big and expensive you want, like a car for an 18th birthday, you can invite people to contribute to that
  • You can create a gift registry and let people know that they can use it if they don’t know what to get

9. Organize a Birthday Memory Book

What’s better than a game of “This Is Your Life”? Instead of trotting people out from behind a curtain, have loved ones work together to assemble a meaningful group scrapbook. Birthday memory books filled with photos, funny stories and sentimental memories from a large group of friends and family will be cherished forever.

10. Put Their Name in the Headlines

Hey, your loved one is turning 40 — he deserves some recognition! Print up a faux newspaper with his name and birthday as the headline. You can fill the rest of the front page news with details about his life’s accomplishments thus far, or what was happening back on the day they were born.

11. Decorations and Ambiance

Transform your venue into a festive space that complements your theme. From balloons and streamers to centerpieces and lighting, pay attention to the details that will enhance the atmosphere and create a visually stunning backdrop for your celebration.

Here are some ideas:

  • Balloons with their age, and/or things that interest them or are on theme
  • Lighting – tiki torches for a luau, string lights etc.
  • Photo Props: Silly themed props such as mustaches, giant glasses and cutouts of the milestone year (like a big 5-0) give guests a way to unwind and take photos with the guest of honor.
  • Trinkets from home: If your theme is based around their (or your, if it’s you!) interests and life, look for things at home, like photo albums or framed photos, tokens from your career or hobbies, or more things that make you, you (or them, them)!
  • Handmade decor: Especially if you’re on a budget, you can make things on the computer (like in my story at the beginning of this article), or with craft items to decorate! My grandfather loved Cookie Monster, so we had a cookie cake and I made a poster and drew Cookie Monster (I was in college at the time)!

12. Personalize the Stemware

A 30th or 75th birthday (or any milestone age, really) is the perfect time to splurge on some personalized glassware. Or, if you prefer, plastic cups. Get the name of the birthday celebrant printed on the side, along with the number of the milestone birthday, to personalize the soiree.

What’s that? Personalized wine glasses or drinking cups aren’t elaborate enough for your birthday party? You can also order wine bottles with a personalized sticker to commemorate your loved one’s big milestone.

13. Entertainment and Activities

Think about how you’ll keep your guests entertained throughout the party. Hire a DJ or live band, set up a dance floor, organize games or activities, or plan a special performance or surprise to make the celebration memorable. You can also have people come up to a microphone and tell favorite stories and memories with the guest of honor.

Here are some more ideas for entertainment and activities:

  • A fun photobooth
  • DJ and dancing
  • A wine or beer tasting or paint and sip
  • Live performances
  • Interactive games  like trivia, karaoke, or a murder mystery game
  • Outdoor activities like lawn games, a scavenger hunt, or a bonfire with s’mores
  • DIY craft stations where guests can create their own keepsakes or crafts, such as personalized candles, custom t-shirts, or decorative mason jars
  • Rent virtual reality equipment for guests to enjoy immersive gaming experiences or virtual adventures
  • Fortune telling or tarot card readings
  • Outdoor movie night with a projector and screen for an outdoor movie night under the stars
  • DIY cocktail bar where guests can mix and match their own drinks using a variety of spirits, mixers, and garnishes. Provide recipe cards or hire a mixologist to guide the process.
  • Karaoke
  • Create a memory lane display featuring photos, mementos, and memorabilia from past birthdays and milestones. Encourage guests to reminisce and share stories about their favorite memories with you.

14. Create a Custom Playlist

Can you remember which songs were popular 40, 50 or 60 years ago? Time to refresh your memory by putting together an epic playlist for the party. You can pass out CDs of the playlist as party favors or create and share a Spotify playlist if your guests are streaming savvy.

15. Find a Photographer

Capture every moment of your milestone birthday celebration by hiring a professional photographer who can immortalize the memories with stunning photographs. Look for someone whose style aligns with your vision for the event and discuss your preferences, such as candid shots, group portraits, or themed photo sessions, to ensure you have beautiful keepsakes to cherish for years to come!

16. Put Your Appreciation in Writing

A milestone birthday is the perfect time to shower your loved one with affection. Put up a poster board, and let guests list things they appreciate about the birthday king or queen. Better yet, create a poster that is milestone themed. If you’re celebrating a 50th birthday for your friend Jane, create a “50 Things We Love About Jane” poster.

17. Create a Hashtag

Want to send your party viral? Give guests a unique hashtag — such as #JulieTurns30 — and encourage your guests to use it when posting to social media. Want to go all out? Create a special Snapchat filter to use on all photos posted on the social platform from your milestone party.

18. Finalize Details and Enjoy!

Double-check all arrangements in the days leading up to the party to ensure everything is in place. Delegate tasks if necessary, and don’t forget to take some time to relax and enjoy the celebration you’ve worked so hard to plan. Cheers to a memorable milestone birthday!

Just because a retirement party is online doesn’t mean it has to be awkward or boring, when you plan and schedule it in advance and host it with confidence! Let’s get into all the ideas:

Tips & Tricks to Ensure A Successful Virtual Retirement Party

One of the best and easiest ways to throw a successful virtual retirement party is to keep things fun, festive, and on theme. This is a special opportunity to celebrate someone who has worked hard to get to where they are today. Follow these tips to keep your party running smoothly and feeling festive for everyone involved!

1. Pick a Time That the Entire Team Can Attend

Whether you’re using Zoom, Google Meet, your own internal conferencing tool or any other video conferencing platform, finding a time when everyone can attend is essential. In-office retirement parties are an opportunity for everyone in the company to celebrate. Virtual retirement parties are no different. Choose a time when the board, committees and entire staff can pause their workday and properly celebrate.

If someone important is unable to attend at any of the times that work for everyone else, you can have them pre-record their well wishes in a video to play during the party!

2. Don’t Make It Too Lengthy

In planning your coworker’s virtual retirement party, be sure to keep it fun, festive and also timely. A long, drawn-out event reminds people of lengthy work meetings, not celebrations. Here’s how to do it:

  • Keep the party on schedule with specific games and activities
  • Set aside a predetermined amount of time for speeches, memory sharing and well-wishes
  • Let guests know in advance how long the party will be, and then allow room for people to stay on longer if they wish

As the host or hostess, your job is to facilitate this event. This means to set a timer for each activity on your phone or elsewhere, and don’t let events go too long. Also pay attention to anything that is stalling or not going well, and either switch gears or get the fun re-started with an anecdote! Remember, you’re in charge, and people will be thankful for you being on top of things throughout the event.

3. Plan the Activities

Another way to ensure a successful virtual retirement party is to plan the activities in advance. Video conferencing can sometimes be awkward, and being unprepared for a party can just add to that awkward feeling.

Instead, entertain guests with some fun virtual games and/or experiences that get people interacting, laughing and enjoying the moment. Games are a simple way to engage the entire list of attendees at your virtual retirement party while also easing the slight tension of online interaction. The best part is that virtual games and experiences are simple! We’ve even listed a few that you and your team might enjoy, like a virtual wine tasting or vacation, retirement trivia and more – keep reading for specifics!

Starting off Strong: Preparation & Anticipation

4. Send Out and Gather RSVPs

The first step to throwing a memorable virtual retirement party is to create a buzz about the event! Sending out virtual invitations through an app like Evite makes the party feel more tangible to the guests, including the guest of honor. The app also allows guests to sign a virtual “guest book” and leave fun comments to prepare for the big day.

Build on your party momentum by inviting all your coworkers to contribute to a retirement memory book to gift the retiree in time for the celebration. Getting the entire office to collaborate and share memories and photos helps facilitate engagement and excitement for the celebration.

5. Set Up a Countdown

What better way to build anticipation than to create a countdown to the big day? Virtual countdowns are easy to set up and serve as a fun way to honor your coworker throughout their last days and months with the company. Platforms like Counting Down To and Time and Date let you create a countdown clock to share with coworkers.

You can even choose a retirement party theme and save the clock to your internal website or flash it up on company Zoom meetings as a reminder of the upcoming event. However you choose to use it, a countdown is a great way to add some lighthearted fun to your highly anticipated virtual retirement party!

6. Send Physical Gifts In Advance

While the key event will be virtual, sending physical gifts is a great way to show the guest of honor that you appreciate them. Need some retirement gift ideas? Even small, personal gifts can make a big statement! From a book by the retiree’s favorite author to travel essentials for their first big trip post-retirement, these tokens will remind recipients that they are loved. Also, don’t forget to print your office memory book and have it shipped straight to them!

Sending gifts to your retiring coworker is one way to make the celebrations last a little longer. Gifts also leave a tremendous impact, especially if they arrive in the days after retirement when your coworker may be missing work or their old routine.

7. Make a Video or Slideshow Tribute Presentation

Photo by Canva Studio on Pexels.com

Create an unforgettable moment by compiling photos and videos, heartfelt messages, memories, and well-wishes into a touching video or slideshow tribute presentation using Powerpoint or Prezi. Invite colleagues, friends, and family to contribute their messages, photos, and videos to celebrate the retiree’s remarkable journey and achievements.

This personalized gesture adds a meaningful touch to the virtual retirement party to leave a lasting impression on the guest of honor!

8. Crafting Collaborative Memories

You can make a game of virtually creating a dynamic word cloud capturing heartfelt sentiments, and/or playing a “caption this” game with photos of the retiree! You can also use these to create a retirement memory book – especially if you haven’t made one in advance, you can actually do some of the work at the party, and then send the finished product afterwards and it will have additional memories attached to it!

9. Invite Those Near & Dear to The Honoree

Just like in-person retirement parties, a virtual retirement party should include close friends and family members of the retiree. The day is extra special when the guest of honor’s spouse, children and former colleagues are there to celebrate too. Be sure to schedule some time for these special invitees to share a few words about their loved one.

10. Share Past Experiences of Their Career

Photo by Matilda Wormwood on Pexels.com

A retirement party is the perfect time to highlight the experiences and achievements of a long and fulfilling career. Invite some of your team’s longest standing employees (and those who have worked closely with the retiree) to share some of their fondest memories and lessons learned from working with the guest of honor. This is a time for celebration, so keep stories and memories festive, positive and encouraging!

Virtual Game & Event Ideas for Your Virtual Retirement Party

13. Have a Virtual Beer or Wine Tasting, or a Mixology Class

If your group isn’t going to respond to cheesy games, or if the retiree prefers a virtual experience and enjoys drinking, you can schedule a hosted tasting or class, or do it yourself! Send out tasting kits in advance or simply encourage guests to pick up their favorite brews or bottles. Then, gather virtually to explore various flavors, share tasting notes, and raise a glass in celebration of the retiree’s accomplishments.

Some places to check out for hosted tastings include City Brew Tours (virtual beer tastings), StagsLeap (virtual wine tastings), and Confetti (virtual mixology class with kits).

14. Go on a Virtual Vacation

Transport your guests to exotic destinations without leaving the comfort of home by organizing a virtual vacation experience for the retirement celebration. Utilize online platforms to virtually explore famous landmarks, museums, or natural wonders around the world. From strolling through the streets of Paris to snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, the possibilities are endless.

15. Plan a Virtual Escape Room

Familiar with the excitement (and tension) of Escape Room? Now you can play online with your entire company. Your virtual Escape Room is like the real thing, except instead of being in the room yourself, you and your party guests get to experience the room remotely. An Escape Room guide joins your virtual retirement party and locks themselves in the room with a camera. Your guests then look for clues and help direct the guide to escape the room. The entire process takes about 60 minutes. You must schedule this in advance, so be sure to plan ahead!

16. Two Truths and a Lie

Photo by Julia M Cameron on Pexels.com

A fun and easy way to get to know each other, and the guest of honor, is to play “Two Truths and a Lie.” Each person shares two facts about themselves that are true and one that is a lie. Guests have to guess which is which. Hand out points for each correct guess and designate a winner at the end! Fun prizes can be anything from office bragging rights and a virtual medal to a coffee gift card for the winner’s local coffee shop.

17. Trivia About the Retiree

Test your knowledge and celebrate the retiree’s journey with a fun-filled trivia session dedicated to their life and career. Gather interesting facts, anecdotes, and memorable moments from throughout their professional and personal life to create a customized trivia game. Challenge guests to recall key milestones, funny stories, and unique quirks about the retiree, fostering laughter, nostalgia, and friendly competition. It’s a lighthearted and entertaining way to honor their legacy and reminisce about the unforgettable moments shared over the years.

18. Retirement Bucket List

Photo by Monica Silvestre on Pexels.com

Encourage the retiree to embark on their retirement adventure by compiling a retirement bucket list together during the virtual celebration. Invite guests to share their suggestions, dreams, and aspirations for the retiree’s next chapter. From travel destinations to new hobbies, experiences, and personal goals, brainstorm a comprehensive list of activities and aspirations to kickstart their retirement journey.

Whether it’s exploring far-off destinations, learning a new skill, or simply enjoying more quality time with loved ones, this collaborative effort will inspire and motivate the retiree as they embark on this exciting new chapter in life!

19. Heads Up!

Another great virtual retirement party game is Heads Up!, a virtual take on classic games like charades. Send a link to your party guests before the big day and have them download the Heads Up! app on their phones. Divide guests into teams and enjoy a laugh with your coworkers. When it’s your turn, simply hold the phone up to your head and try to guess what is on the screen based on the clues from your team. When you get it right, you get to move on to the next word or you can skip a challenging word at the risk of losing points. Either way, your virtual party guests will have a great time.

20. Never Have I Ever – Office Edition

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

Never Have I Ever is a classic party game that comes in many forms. For a virtual retirement party, however, we recommend trying this Zoom-friendly office edition. Start by having everyone at the party hold up five fingers. The first person to go says, “Never have I ever…” followed by something they have never done around the office or during the workday. For example, “Never have I ever watched TV during a work Zoom meeting.” If anyone has done this before, they have to close one finger. Once all five fingers are closed, that person exits the game!

21. BINGO

Add a twist of excitement to the retirement party with a classic game of Bingo! Create customized Bingo cards featuring retirement-themed words, phrases, or memories related to the guest of honor. Host a lively Bingo session virtually, calling out numbers and retirement-related trivia while guests mark off their cards. Whether it’s a full house or a lucky line, winners can receive fun prizes or accolades, adding a dash of friendly competition to the celebration. It’s a timeless game that promises laughter, camaraderie, and fond memories shared with colleagues, friends, and family.

22. Virtual Talent Show

Encourage guests to showcase their hidden talents in a virtual talent show dedicated to celebrating the retiree! From singing and dancing to comedy sketches or musical performances, participants can share their unique skills and entertain the virtual audience (and they can make it geared toward the retiree to make it extra fun!).

23. Honor the Guest

Photo by Tima Miroshnichenko on Pexels.com

The entire reason you and your team are gathering online is to celebrate the guest of honor. Set aside an ample amount of time (but don’t let it go too long!) to allow people to share fun work memories, stories and personal thoughts about the retiree. You can even encourage everyone to BYOB to the party and show up with a sparkling beverage in hand so you can all make virtual toasts!

24. Set Up Future Communication for Retiree Mentorship

For the retiree who won’t actually stop working – or doesn’t want to – set up some ways for him or her to connect with current and future employees to offer advice and mentorship. Establish virtual communication channels such as a dedicated Slack channel, a quarterly webinar series, or a mentorship program to facilitate ongoing interaction between the retiree and colleagues.

Encourage the retiree to share their wealth of knowledge, insights, and experience with the next generation of employees, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development within the organization. By setting up these future communication avenues, the retiree can continue to make a meaningful impact and leave a lasting legacy long after their official retirement date!

  • Continuously welcome newcomers and ensure everyone’s video conferencing is working smoothly.

7-10 minutes: Kick off the party with the first game, such as retirement-themed trivia or bingo.

5 minutes: Present a tribute video featuring photos, videos, and music celebrating the retiree’s accomplishments and memories.

7-10 minutes: Now that everyone’s warmed up, take the next game or activity up a notch to keep it going strong. Options include:

FAQs About Throwing Virtual Retirement Celebrations

Photo by Julia Larson on Pexels.com

Why Should You Hold a Virtual Retirement Party?

Retirement is an incredible accomplishment. It represents years of hard work and devotion. Retirement is an opportunity to honor and encourage friends and coworkers, and just because you’re not all in the same city, state or country, it doesn’t mean the moment should pass by unacknowledged. A virtual retirement party is the perfect way to let your coworker know you will miss them, but also that their time with your company has left a mark!

How long should the party last?

There is no hard and fast rule about how long a virtual retirement party should last. If you plan to include games and activities, we recommend keeping your party from 90 minutes to two hours (remember that the virtual Escape Room takes 60 min). For parties that are simply a time to share memories, 30 minutes may be enough time to celebrate.

How do you handle coworkers leaving virtually?

Hosting a virtual party, plus creating collaborative gifts (like Ecards, memory books or gift baskets), are some of the best ways to honor coworkers who are leaving the organization virtually.

For the virtual party, encourage your coworkers to stay for the entire party to help make the guest of honor feel valued. You can even share the itinerary with everyone so that if they need to slip out early, they can find an appropriate time that won’t interrupt the festivities.

What are the most important parts of a virtual retirement party?

Making sure your guest of honor feels special is the most important aspect of a virtual retirement party. Be sure to prioritize time to share stories and celebrate the retiree’s accomplishments.

How to do a retirement party on Zoom?

Schedule a Zoom meeting and send out invites and reminders, plan interactive activities and stick to the schedule, share retirement-themed backgrounds, and record the event for the best experience.

Who hosts a retirement party?

Colleagues or friends typically host the party, sometimes with the retiree’s family.

Do you give favors at a retirement party?

It’s optional, but you can offer small favors or tokens of appreciation to guests as a gesture of gratitude. For an online retirement party, this can be something sent out in advance, something that can be sent online like a gift card (that can also be done as a giveaway or virtual door prize), or as part of an experience, like kits for a mixology class!

Final Thoughts: Planning A Memorable Virtual Retirement Party

Retirement is an achievement worth celebrating! Thanks to technology and a little creativity, hosting a virtual retirement party for your coworker has never been easier. With a little planning, you can engage your team and plan a thoughtful event that includes games, gifts, special stories and plenty of shared memories.

How To Plan And Throw A Retirement Party In 17 Steps (2026)

Looking for how to plan and throw a retirement party? We’ve got the perfect guide for you!

Hard work deserves to be celebrated! One of the best ways to celebrate retirement is with a party. But if party planning feels overwhelming, you’ve come to the right place. Sometimes all it takes is a quick guide and some inspiration to throw that perfect celebration. Honor your retiree with a bit of hoopla and fun by following these top tips on planning a retirement party.

How To Plan The Retirement Party: The Essentials

Here are the first, and main things you’ll need to throw a retirement party. After these, we’ll get into the details of the party, like games and more details!

1. Start With Your Budget

Every party starts with a budget. Determining how much you can (and should) spend on a retirement party helps make every other decision that much easier. Here are just a few things to consider when putting your budget in place:

  • Where the party will take place (venue) and associated costs
  • Food (formal or informal catering vs. potluck style)
  • Decorations
  • Invitations (digital, printed, mailing costs)
  • Games and activities
  • Entertainment
  • Equipment rental costs
  • Number of guests

Before diving into the finer details of your event, take a moment to decide who will help cover the event’s costs and how much everyone is willing to chip in. Once your final budget is in place, choosing that perfect venue and retirement cake will be a breeze.

2. Formal or Surprise?

Who you’re celebrating, as well as the company and role they are retiring from, play an important role in the type of party you plan. The two main types of retirement parties are formal and surprise parties.

Surprise parties are great for those who simply love a good celebration (and a good surprise). If you aren’t sure what your guest of honor would like, check in with their loved ones and closest friends. Consider your company’s established traditions when throwing a retirement party for your colleague. Perhaps a formal luncheon at a local restaurant, a fancy dinner with close colleagues, or a midday office party are the favored methods of celebration.

3. Create a Guest List & Decide on The Mode of Invitation

Now you’re in the fun part of planning and throwing a retirement party! It’s time to create that guest list! The big decisions are made, and you can focus on the finer details.

Guests lists are influenced by the size and type of retirement party you are planning, but here are a few important people to consider, including:

  • Direct colleagues, employers, and work friends
  • Past colleagues and employers who have remained close friends
  • Spouse, family, and friends from outside of work

Retirement is a huge milestone; your guest of honor’s loved ones will undoubtedly want to be involved! For smaller, formal luncheons, it’s okay to simply include the retiree’s spouse and closest colleagues. Larger parties are an excellent opportunity to expand the guest list to include children, past bosses, and friends from outside of work or from past jobs.

Tip: When you send out invites, it’s the perfect time to invite guests to contribute to a collaborative retirement memory book with Newlywords! Each person can design their own pages with photos, notes and stories to help create a gift they’ll never forget!

4. Decide on Date & Venue

The time and venue of your retirement party set the tone for the celebration. Spend time considering the retiree’s likes and dislikes and discussing timing with their spouse and family.

Tip: It is considered good practice to host a retirement party on or just after the date of retirement. Too early, and the retiree’s final days at work can feel anticlimactic. Too late, and they will already be on to their next adventure (that long-awaited European vacation, perhaps?).

Choose a venue that matches the essence of your theme (if you have one) or simply the vibe of your party. Going for a casual summer retirement party? Consider an outdoor venue that allows your guests to enjoy summer games and sun. Aiming for a formal and intimate surprise party? Do some sleuthing with friends and family to find the guest of honor’s favorite fancy restaurant.

Be flexible when determining the date, and make sure it’s at a time and place when all guests and colleagues can attend. If your guests might appreciate an unconventional setting for the retirement part, just make sure it’s something the retiree will enjoy. How about an art gallery space if they love art, or rent out an entire movie theater room for the evening, for your guests, or–if you can pull it off–an airport hangar if they are avid travelers!

5. Retirement Party Menu &/or Catering

Let the venue, theme, and type of retirement party help direct your menu. If you’re throwing a travel-themed party, try matching the cuisine to some of the retiree’s favorite destinations.

Some venues (such as country clubs and restaurants) will cater the event to your specifications.

For other venues, such as a private home or public park, consider either catering or cooking some of the retiree’s favorite foods. There is no right or wrong answer regarding a retirement party menu. Just be sure to end your menu with a slice of cake or a retirement-themed dessert!

6. Retirement Party Theme & Decorations

Part of the fun of planning a retirement party is picking a theme that fits the retiree. While not every party needs a theme, having one helps you decide on party decor.

Here are some retirement theme party ideas to get you started:

  • Movie Night Extravaganza: Roll out the red carpet for the retiree and create a cinematic atmosphere, complete with popcorn, movie posters, and a highlight reel of their career.
  • Cruise Ship Bon Voyage: Transform the venue into a cruise ship setting, with nautical decorations, tropical drinks, and a farewell to the retiree’s professional voyage.
  • Milestone Memories: Celebrate the retiree’s life journey by highlighting significant milestones with a timeline display, capturing memorable moments from each stage of their career and personal life.
  • Musical Melodies: Create a playlist of the retiree’s favorite tunes and decorate with musical notes and instruments for a melodious celebration of their years of hard work and dedication.
  • Artistic Expression: Celebrate the retiree’s creative side with an artsy theme, incorporating paintings, sculptures, or even an art class to allow guests to explore their artistic talents.
  • Sports Spectacle: Tailor the party around the retiree’s favorite sport or team, with themed decorations, jerseys, and perhaps even a friendly game or sports trivia to keep the energy high.
  • Techie Time: If the retiree is tech-savvy, celebrate their journey in the digital age with a tech-themed party, featuring gadgets, virtual reality experiences, and a nostalgic look back at technological advancements.
  • Wine and Dine Delight: Host an elegant wine tasting event, complete with a selection of the retiree’s favorite wines and gourmet pairings, celebrating the finer things in life after retirement.
  • Superhero Send-Off: Embrace the retiree’s heroic qualities with a superhero-themed party, where guests can dress up as their favorite characters and celebrate the retiree’s super accomplishments.
  • Nature Retreat: Bring the outdoors in with a nature-inspired theme, incorporating elements like plants, trees, and rustic decor to create a serene environment for the retiree to relax and enjoy the beauty of retirement.

Remember to tailor the theme to the retiree’s personality and interests for a truly memorable retirement celebration!

The theme will also influence whether you’re throwing a formal soiree or an informal shindig. Hawaiian BBQ probably won’t jive with your private dinner party, so keep that in mind.

Ultimately, have fun with it! Focus on decor that also works well with your theme and venue.

Wine bottles labeled with “Party like there’s no work tomorrow!” add some humor to any retirement party theme. For the lighthearted retiree, funny banners, buttons, and decor with a fun tagline go a long way in making your retirement party a success.

Ideas For Retirement Party Games & Activities

You’re off to a great start planning the ultimate retirement party! Here are just a few ideas to incorporate during the big event.

7. Toasts & Speeches

Take some time during the retirement party to give speeches honoring the retiree. For larger parties, assign this task to a few significant people in advance, such as a boss, spouse, or close colleagues.

To honor the retiree, you can ask a few people to share memories and heartfelt thanks through a short, genuine speech. You could also play a PowerPoint video to showcase milestones and events throughout the years. Anyone from former bosses to family members would be suitable for giving a speech at the retirement party. Just remember to give the guests adequate time to plan their speeches prior to the event.

Tip: For ideas, check out this site, Retirement Quotes, for sample speech templates you can use for creating your own speeches!

8. Walk Down Memory Lane

Nothing says retirement quite like a walk down memory lane. Take time to share the significant moments and memories from the retiree’s career. This can be done with a photo slideshow, a video, or a collaborative memory book. Memory books are a great way to include the entire office and family members, giving everyone a chance to share their favorite memories!

9. A Creative Cake

Don’t forget the dessert! Every party needs a cake (or at least something sweet to celebrate). Consider getting a cake that matches your theme or the retiree’s career. Some ideas include a gavel for the retiring judge, a map of the retiree’s first travel destination, or even a simple cake with your favorite quote or office joke.

10. Have Games & Other Fun Activities

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

Games are a great way to keep your guests entertained while emphasizing your party theme. For the backyard BBQ, include some cornhole, bocce, or volleyball. For a more formal affair, icebreaker games that can be played around a dinner table are a great option. For larger events, consider music and dancing to keep your guests energized and having fun.

Some retirement party game ideas include:

11. Build The Party Around the Hobbies of the Retiree

Hobbies are a great source of inspiration when planning a retirement party. If you aren’t familiar with your retiree’s hobbies, consider asking their spouse or family for some ideas. Hobbies such as golf, gardening, boating, and travel make great foundations for a retirement party.

12. Commemorate The Retiree

Photo by cottonbro studio on Pexels.com

Be sure to schedule some time at the party to honor and commemorate the retiree. This can take the form of speeches or can be a separate time where a specific person takes a moment to share some of the retiree’s accomplishments. This is also a great time to give the retiree a group gift, like a Newlywords collaborative memory book!

13. Give a Retirement Gift

Gifts are always a great idea! Common retirement gifts include engraved items (like pens, clocks, or frames), hobby-specific goods, gift cards, and books.

Need ideas? We have guides on the best retirement gifts for:

Plan this one in advance: Ask everyone to contribute a retirement wish or share a story about the retiree. This retirement memory book is like a huge group scrapbook to be treasured forever. Set up the online collection page, give your guests the link so they can share their pictures and messages, and have it printed and mailed to you to gift at the retirement party as the ultimate group gift.

14. A Fun, Lighthearted Playlist

Photo by Isabella Mendes on Pexels.com

Did we mention music? There are plenty of options for adding some good sounds to your retirement party. Hire a DJ, hire a band, or simply put together a fun and memorable playlist to play in the background.

Quite a few songs will work for the “retirement” and “relaxation” theme of your event. If your guests are game for ad-lib performances, you could even make karaoke a lively part of the entertainment. Some of the songs you might choose are:

  • “Another One Bites the Dust” by Queen
  • “Hit the Road, Jack” by Ray Charles
  • “When I am 64” by the Beatles
  • “Young at Heart” by Doris Day and Frank Sinatra
  • “Vacation” by the GoGos
  • “V A C A T I O N” by Connie Francis
  • “Leaving on a Jet Plane” by Peter, Paul and Mary

Of course, you could also prepare a playlist of your celebrant’s favorite songs. To make things easier, here are a couple of retirement song playlists from Spotify and 8tracks.

15. Set Up a Photo Booth

One way to capture all the fun memories from the day is to set up a photo booth. You can either rent a booth or make a DIY version. Whichever way you go, when you plan your retirement party, be sure to include plenty of themed props!

16. Fun Dress-Up Party

Photo by Nataliya Vaitkevich on Pexels.com

Another twist on fun parties is asking guests to come dressed in something that reminds them of the retiree or celebrant. Maybe people will come as the celebrant’s favorite actor, or what they wanted to be when they grew up (airplane pilot), or themes based on their favorite travels (think summer in Italy!). The options here are endless. Pinterest has plenty of visuals for costume ideas, if your guests need help with originality and creativity.

There are many ways to send off that special colleague into retirement. With a little advance planning and creativity, you can make it a retirement party that he/she will never forget!

17. Consider Doing Some Charity

For the conscientious retiree, make their party unique with an element of charity. If your retiree volunteers time or money to a specific charity, consider including charity work in the party. This can take the form of hands-on volunteer time before the festivities. It can also take the form of an auction, game, or competition at the party that raises funds for that charity.

Who usually pays for a retirement party?

The cost of a retirement party is typically covered by the organizers, which may include colleagues, friends, or family members pooling resources. In some cases, employers may contribute to the cost as a gesture of appreciation.

How many hours should a retirement party be?

A retirement party duration can vary, but it often lasts between two to four hours. Consider the retiree’s preferences and schedule when planning the timing of the event.

What do you talk about at a retirement party?

Conversations at a retirement party can cover a range of topics, including the retiree’s achievements, memories from their career, future plans, and well-wishes. Keep the tone positive and celebratory.

Do you give favors at a retirement party?

While not mandatory, giving small party favors can be a nice gesture. Consider items related to the retiree’s interests, the party theme, or something personalized to commemorate the occasion.

What food to bring to a retirement party?

The choice of food depends on the preferences of the retiree and the guests. Consider a mix of appetizers, main dishes, and desserts, taking into account dietary restrictions. You can opt for catering, a potluck, or a combination of both.

Can I plan my own retirement party?

While it’s not common for the retiree to plan their own party, they can certainly provide input on preferences, guest list, and other details, and you can absolutely plan your own retirement party!

Who gives a speech at a retirement party?

Commonly, a supervisor, colleague, or close friend may give a speech at a retirement party. The speaker should focus on highlighting the retiree’s accomplishments, sharing anecdotes, and expressing gratitude.

Are gifts expected at a retirement party?

Gifts are not obligatory, but guests may choose to bring a gift as a token of appreciation. If gifts are given, they can range from sentimental items to practical gifts related to the retiree’s future plans or hobbies.

How much should I give for a retirement party?

The amount spent on a gift for a retirement party can vary widely based on personal relationships and financial considerations. It’s more about the thought and effort put into the gift rather than its monetary value. Choose something meaningful and consider the retiree’s preferences.

Best Retirement Gifts for Parents (Meaningful & Unique Ideas for 2026)

Searching for the best retirement gifts for parents requires a thoughtful approach. As they step into this special chapter, marked by a mix of emotions, we’ve tailored this list with a variety of needs and budgets in mind.

Recognizing the unique bond between parents and their children, our curated selection includes items that resonate with the warmth and appreciation befitting such a momentous occasion. Explore our collection to discover the perfect gift that aligns with your parents’ distinct personalities and interests, creating a retirement celebration that is both heartfelt and unforgettable!

What You Should Look for in a Retirement Gift for Your Parents

When searching for that perfect retirement gift for your parents, there are a few considerations that can help you choose the right thing. Think about:

  • Value: Monetary value won’t always ensure your loved one will appreciate their gift. A card is a thoughtful and necessary part of your gift, but there are definitely affordable gifts out there that they’ll love to add that extra emotional value to the occasion.
  • Practicality: Many retirement gifts are made to be funny, but the person getting the gift may not have an actual use for it, and it may get thrown into the giveaway pile or stowed away in storage. Instead of gag gifts, make sure your gift is memorable and special, and/or usable and high-quality, and they’re sure to love it!
  • Setting: Consider where and when you’ll be giving the gift. Is it at a retirement party? Is the party in a home, at work or elsewhere? This can impact what you decide to get, and also if you want to go in on a bigger gift with multiple people, like a collaborative memory book.

Things To Consider When Choosing A Retirement Gift For A Teacher

  • Throw them a surprise party: Nothing quite says “we appreciate you” like a surprise retirement party! Recently, a local high school choir teacher I know retired after over thirty years of teaching. Former students worked with the school and current students to turn his final choir concert into a surprise retirement party. The former students surprised the teacher by joining the choir on stage to sing the closing number.

Afterward, with cake and drinks in hand, students shared fond memories of their time in the choir and even shared videos from graduates who lived across the country and couldn’t be at the retirement party. The choir teacher got to see firsthand how many generations of students he impacted, which was amazing!

  • Consider Their Interests, Hobbies & Future Aspirations: You can be sure to give a gift they’ll appreciate by doing your homework (pun intended)! Think about what they already enjoy, or ask them about their goals and dreams for the future, like if they plan to travel or golf more, for example! Tips To Host A Successful Party for Teachers

A surprise teacher retirement party is an extra memorable way to celebrate your teacher. So where do you even begin? Every retirement party is as unique as the person you’re celebrating, but there are a few things to consider in order to make your teacher feel special.

  • Include as many current & former students as possible

Invite students to collaborate on a retirement memory book that you give to your teacher at the party. That way those who don’t live locally can still take part. The more memories you can share with your teacher, the better!

  • Invite the teacher’s family & loved ones to take part

Family members will love the idea of a teacher retirement party and can help create an event that is both personal and unique.

  • Pick a theme

Keep the party lighthearted and teacher-centric by picking a theme related to who the teacher is, something they love, or the topic(s) they teach. This also helps others in choosing an appropriate gift to bring to the party.

  • Have fun!

If there is anything all teachers have in common is their desire to impact the next generation through knowledge. Have fun reminding your teacher of the true value and reach of their career.
